In loving memory of Kate Wheeler who will be very much missed by all her family and friends. We will remember Kate for her love of travel and refusing to be dissuaded from visiting places due to her age. Her daughter, Gill, remembers suggesting she take up knitting as movement became more strenuous, she said ‘No – that was for older people’. Kate had endless enthusiasm to learn languages, play Bridge and Scrabble and go out for as many meals as possible. People who met her noticed her quick wit even in later years and her beautiful blue eyes. We will remember: how determined she was fighting a stroke and other illnesses with great strength and driving all the way back from Bristol with a broken ankle; her Daredevil decorating…… (steps balanced on telephone directories on the stairs, while wallpapering); her kindness always checking if you wanted a biscuit or a cup of tea and enjoying red wine, coffee (never water!!!!) and eating chocolates; that she was a compulsive weeder… the garden couldn’t be left alone and how much she loved seeing and watching videos of her great grandsons.

A legacy to Battersea Dogs Home seems very fitting, she was always a great lover of dogs and owned spaniels all her life. Henry and Brandy who she adopted from Battersea both gave her such joy, love and companionship. The family remember many walks on Epsom Downs and Headley Heath. In later years, when she could no longer own a dog when the family took her out and she saw dogs in the park or at cafe's, her whole face would light up and she was so happy. If she got to give them a stroke it was the highlight of her day. She found joy in the special gift dogs have, to show love to everyone with their beautiful eyes and their infectious excitement for life. Sometimes passing dog walkers would worry about dogs licking her or jumping up and putting their paws on her lap but she could not be happier for them to do so. We hope this fund helps dogs at Battersea and bring love and joy to their new owners.
